Analyst Praises Creativity of Chicago Bears Caleb Williams
David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

It was a foregone conclusion that the Chicago Bears were going to use the No. 1 overall pick on USC quarterback Caleb Williams in the 2024 NFL Draft. After the Bears traded Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers, it became even more evident what their plan was.

Chicago is hoping that Caleb Williams can be the franchise quarterback they have been seeking virtually for the entire history of their franchise. He certainly possesses the talent to reach incredible heights, as analysts viewed him as one of the better quarterback prospects in recent years.

At USC and Oklahoma, both under head coach Lincoln Riley, Williams had some very impressive statistics. There is a lot to like about his makeup and ability, as he has the tools to find success early in his career.

The Chicago Bears should also be given some credit for the situation they created for him to enter. Normally, No. 1 overall picks are joining the worst team in the NFL. But, because this trade was acquired from the Carolina Panthers in a trade, the Bears are further along in their roster-building plans.

Caleb Williams will have one of the best wide receiver trios to work with in the league. D.J. Moore is joined by veteran Keenan Allen and Rome Odunze, the No. 9 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Running back D’Andre Swift was signed in free agency and the team still has tight end Cole Kmet, while adding veteran Gerald Everett.

With improvements along the offensive line, this is a group that could be elevated to new heights by Caleb Williams. One part of Williams’ game that ESPN draft analyst Jordan Reid really likes is his creativity.

In a recent article, he made predictions about what category each rookie could lead the NFL in five years down the road. For Caleb Williams, Reid leaned into his creativity, selecting touchdown passes outside the pocket.

“Touchdown passes from outside the pocket. His off-script ability will likely translate to the pros, as he can break down defenses once he gets outside the pocket. Williams has the mobility to escape and then the vision and creativity to generate explosive plays through the air. His 11 touchdown throws from outside the pocket led the FBS in 2023,” Reid wrote.

While the Chicago Bears would prefer Caleb Williams is protected in the pocket, it is nice knowing that he can improvise as well. The best quarterbacks in the NFL nowadays have some escapability and creativity to their game, and the USC product has that in spades.
