Former top prospect Jordan Groshans has been called up by the Miami Marlins
Brian Calloway | Lansing State Journal

A former top Blue Jays prospect will be making his debut in the near future.

According to Milb Central on Twitter, Jordan Groshans will be called up by the lowly Miami Marlins.

The 23-year-old shortstop was traded at the 2022 deadline for relievers Anthony Bass and Zach Pop, and catcher Edward Duran, who was originally a player to be named later.

Groshans, a former Top 100 prospect, slashed .301/.398/.416 in 133 plate appearances with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, Miami’s Triple A affiliate team. Interestingly, he saw an increase in power as he hit two home runs compared to just one in his 279 plate appearances with the Blue Jays Triple A affiliate.

Furthermore, he drew the same amount of walks as strikeouts, as he had a 14.3 BB% and K% with the Jumbo Shrimp. He had a successful 123 wRC+ with Jacksonville, leading to a very deserved promotion.

As for the two relievers that the Blue Jays got in return, both have contributed to the Blue Jays’ playoff aspirations. In 9.2 innings pitched with the Jays, Pop has a 3.72 ERA and 3.64 FIP with a 10.3 K%. He has yet to walk anyone in a Blue Jays uniform.

Anthony Bass is the only reliever that is comparable with Jordan Romano. Since re-joining the Jays, Bass has been used heavily, pitching 17.1 innings with a 1.56 ERA and 3.87 FIP. Furthermore, he has a 28.4 K% and 6 BB% in that stretch. The only reason his FIP is so high is the three home runs he has given up.

Edward Duran is an 18-year-old catcher whose highest level has been the Dominican Summer League. This season, he slashed .224/.325/.306 in 169 plate appearances. He finished with an 81 wRC+ after finishing with a 156 wRC+ in 2021.

Either way, we here at Blue Jays Nation are excited for Jordan Groshans’ opportunity and hope he can contribute to the Marlins for years to come.
